About Helping Drug Addicts
Drug addiction is a problem that seems to get worse and worse each year. If you are in love with a drug addict then you know how tough the situation can be. Nothing that has been done seems to work and no matter how much money the government throws at the problem it still grows. It is in all cities, large and small and affects people from every single denomination. Drug addiction does not discriminate at all.
So how do we help drug addicts? Helping drug addicts can be many things or one single thing. Some churches and synagogues have outreach programs and try to use religion to help the addict realize their addiction and to find God. Sometimes this works and the religious organization is successful with helping drug addicts kick the habit but many times the addict just ends up on the streets again or in a hospital from a drug overdose.
Some communities have drug outreach facilities that are set up for helping drug addicts and alcoholics. Many times these addicts have no where to turn for help and worse, no place to sleep and eat. These community shelters reach out to them to offer assistance and guidance. Some are helping drug addicts reconnect with their families and friends to form a support system for them.
If you suspect someone is a drug addict then the worst thing you can do is give them money. If they look hungry then buy them some food, a coffee, or a snack. If you give them money you are not helping them since they will most likely go and try to buy some more drugs or alcohol.
Education is key and we need to start by teaching our children at an early age about drug addiction and alcoholism. Helping young drug addicts could be one of the biggest challenges in the substance abuse community. We need to stop the problem before it starts. Parents, schools, and communities must learn to work together. It really does take a village to raise a child.
