Correcting Cat Behavior Problems

Cat behavior problems are a common problem among pet owners. At one point or another, all cats are going to act out to some degree. This may be the result of a lack of training, a temper tantrum, or even a cry for attention. People have tried many ways to correct these behavior problems, all with varying degrees of success. No matter what option you choose, there are a few things that you absolutely have to do if you are serious about ending cat behavior problems once and for all.

You have to correct the bad behavior immediately after the cat does it. Cats don’t understand English to the degree that is necessary if you want to lecture or punish it later on about whatever it did while you were away. The only way that your cat will understand clearly that the behavior it just performed is unacceptable is for that behavior to be immediately corrected as soon as it is performed. It is even better for the correction to occur during the behavior itself.

Remember to reward good behaviors. If all the cat knows is punishment, it will eventually come to fear and resent you instead of thinking of you as a friend. In order to encourage a good relationship with your cat, as well as to encourage acceptable behaviors, it is very important to reward good behavior with lots of cooing, petting, and attention. This encourages your cat to love you and to perform that behavior again in order to get more of that pleasurable attention. Again, it is very important that you do this right away if you want the cat to understand.

Cat behavior problems occur for a number of different reasons, but the training to correct them, in most cases, is much more simple than it sounds. In the end, it comes down to making sure the cat understands that good behaviors result in pleasurable circumstances and bad behaviors result in unpleasant consequences.
