Plumbing refers to a skilled trade that involves using pipes and fixtures for proper distribution of water and transport of drainage. The persons engaged in this trade are called plumbers who perform all installation or repairs works of the piping systems and equipments. The concerned industry holds the most significant part of a developed economy owing to the extreme need for clean water and good waste disposal facilities in both commercial and residential buildings.
Plumbing is primarily categorized into different systems that include supply of cold or hot water, installation of septic systems, traps, vents, rainwater drainage system, and fuel gas pipelines. The evolution of plumbing dates to the 19th century with the formation of modern or urban cities. Initially waste was collected and disposed underground or into the river. The origin of this trade began during ancient civilizations when public baths were created. Now solid wastes are being transmitted through pipelines to treatment plants where the water is partially purified. In the process, the rest of the waste is drained into the river or sea.
To start this job one needs to have a complete idea of the piping materials used. Each pipe has its own use and is made of different materials like copper, brass, plastic or galvanized steel. Among this, the standard one used for water lines are made of rigid copper. These pipes cannot be bent so proper soldering of tees and joints need to be performed on them. Soldering is a major task, which involves polishing of both the exterior and interior surfaces of the pipe using a fine emery cloth. This is a continuous process, which needs to be done until a clean and shiny look is achieved. During the process, the fittings need to be fired too. On the other hand leaking copper pipes can be fixed with the help of a union or coupling. For which the pipe needs to be cut with a tubing cutter.
