The Possible Complications from Laser Skin Treatments

Laser skin resurfacing is a new but very popular treatment option for removing aged or damage skin to allow fresher and younger skin to grow from underneath. It is best used on conditions such as wrinkles, crows feet, acne scars, birth marks and wine stains. It can’t be used on very severe wrinkles, sagging skin and stretch marks. With wrinkles, the results are also not permanent as they are caused by movements in your facial muscle and they will hence reappear after awhile.

As with any medical procedures, laser skin treatments aren’t risk free. The complications that may result are:

-    The skin turning darker or lighter than before the treatment and this may last for a number of months. People with a very dark skin tone are at a higher risk of this complication.
-    Herpes infection. If you experience cold sores caused by the herpes virus, the laser resurfacing can cause the virus to awaken. You should inform our dermatologist of the fact you have cold sores and he or she will prescribe medication to help prevent any flare ups.

Other complications from laser resurfacing can include acne flare ups, scarring, burns, inflammation and skin redness.

These complications are rare. But if you are concerned, you should speak to your doctor.

One way of lessening your risk of complications is choosing the right doctor. You should investigate your doctor thoroughly and ask as many questions as you feel are necessary in order to understand the procedure. If the doctor is reluctant or is pressed for time to answer your question then you may wish to find another professional.

A professional dermatologist will take a full medical history, give you a thorough physical exam and discuss your expectations of the procedure. He or she shouldn’t ‘sell’ you laser skin treatments but instead give you the information that will help you make the choice for yourself.
