Tree transplanting historical background

Many people have a desire these days to either have a tree removed from their property or to have a semi mature tree planted on their property. Tree transplantation can do both of these jobs. In the case of having a tree removed from a person’s property, this is a better option than having the tree cut down. In the second case, many people choose to have so many mature trees transplanted onto their properties so that they can have an instant garden.

Transplanting tree goes a long time back into history. One of the first mentions of tree transplantation in any detail is back in 1670 in a book called “Sylva” by John Evelyn. In that book, Evelyn describes the transplantation of an oak “as big as twelve oxen” in order to fill a gap in an avenue of trees. One of the transplantation jobs that are required today is to plug the gap in a hedgerow in which one of the plants has become damaged or diseased. Forestry in Ireland does not really require the services of tree transplantation very often. For the most part, Irish forestry tends to transplant trees at a very young age in order to establish a new forest plantation.

The Planter ’s Guide was written by Henry Steuart in 1827. In this book he describes how he managed to move two large trees on an estate in Scotland using a two wheeled transplantation machine. Later, in a book entitled The Tree Lifter, Col George Greenwood told about a machine that he had designed in order to transplant large trees. The trees that were transplanted were always transported in a vertical position, which differed to the mode of transportation up until now which was horizontally. Finally, in 1852, William Barron wrote a book entitled the British winter. In this book he describes the removal of evergreen trees up to a height of 50 feet. He describes his transplantation machine in detail, and the methods of transportation uses. He also transports the trees in a vertical position. Barron was later to specialize in tree transplantation in any company that he established. Forest Ireland undertakes tree transplantation’s from the nursery stage up to the semi mature stage.
